Where Truffles Grow

The Motovun Forest

Motovun forest is one of the most renowned truffle regions in the world, known for its rich truffle yield. This unique forest is home to some of the finest truffles, including both white and black varieties.

Types of Truffles

While there are hundreds of truffle species, the genus Tuber contains most of the gourmet varieties. In the Mirna River valley, you can find the highly prized white truffle, which matures in early fall, and the black truffle, harvested both in winter and summer and it is available all year around.

The White Truffle

The most prized mushroom in the world is the white truffle (Tuber magnatum pico) which grows from September to January. This hidden treasure is found with the help of specially trained dogs, making it one of the most sought-after delicacies. They have a very strong and aromatic smell accompanied with the taste that is delicate and refined. That’s why the white truffle is best paired with dishes such as pasta or omelet – where all the intense flavours get the spotlight they deserve.
